    Parents back religion at Prebbleton School

    Christian religious education will remain unchanged in Prebbleton School after strong backing from its parent community. A survey, conducted last month, found that 63.77 per cent of respondents wanted religious education to carry on in its current format of half an hour a week during class time. School is officially closed during this time but parents can opt out. Results showed 21.26 per cent of respondents would prefer religious education not be held at all and 14.98 per cent would prefer to see religious studies held outs...

    Quake repairs could cost $12.1m

    Earthquake repairs on Selwyn's infrastructure and assets are well on their way to completion. So far $8.9 million has been spent on repairing earthquake-damaged district council assets following the 2010 and 2011 Canterbury quakes, around 75 per cent of the total expenditure needed for repairs. The magnitude 7.1 earthquake which occurred in September 2010 was centred near Darfield in Selwyn. Mayor Kelvin Coe said that while the earthquakes caused considerable damage to personal property, the district was reasonably fortunate...

    Dangerous intersections

    Four Selwyn intersections feature on a list of the country's 100 worst for crashes. The list has been compiled by the New Zealand Transport Agency and local Government using crash statistics from 2003 to 2012. The highest of Selwyn's entries on the list, in 69th place, was the intersection of State Highway 1 and Aylesbury Rd in Burnham. It has had 10 injury crashes during the 10 years, although only one of those resulted in serious injuries. In 83rd place is State Highway 1 and Dawsons Rd near Templeton, with 10 injury crash...

    Cable trouble for Telecom

    One of New Zealand's major telecommunications providers is among companies that are unable to provide services in some of Selwyn's newest subdivisions, due to a lack of copper cables. Telecom is able to offer broadband internet over fibre cables but requires the copper to deliver phone services. Fibre cables are being installed around the country as part of the Government's Ultra-Fast Broadband Initiative.
